New scholarship places for the school year

Our new intake of scholarship students has started the school year, with places kept for girls at risk of leaving early.

Our new intake of scholarship students started the school year this month. Places were offered after home visits to the families who applied, with priority for households where a child had already started working, and for girls at the stage where leaving school is most likely.

What a place covers

Each place runs for a full academic year and covers:

  • Admission and tuition fees, paid directly to the school
  • Uniforms, shoes and a school bag
  • Textbooks and stationery
  • A monthly stipend for the households that need it most

The stipend matters more than it looks. In families where an older child could be earning instead, it makes up for the income the household gives up by keeping that child in class.

Staying in touch with families

We check in with every family we support during the term. If a student's attendance drops we visit the home to find out why, rather than withdrawing the place, because the reason is usually something we can help with.
